In an otherwise empty Parliament Hall, in wig and gown two teams of counsel walked slowly up and down, waiting for the word. Through the stained glass great South Window, the bright morning sun came streaming through, glorifying King James as he handed over the cause of justice in Scotland to his right trusty and well beloved judges in Parliament House. Keeping in step, Mr Brogan McLane QC and his junior slow-marched up and down, up and down, up and down; their opponents doing exactly the same one length of the Hall apart.

With every legal plea well founded, every detail of the facts at their fingertips and every nuance of the case law in their heads, both sides waited. Occasionally both senior counsel would look across the Hall with a shrug. No-one seemed to know the cause of the delay.

At exactly the centre line, old Jimmy Robertson caught senior counsels' eyes simultaneously.

'Any word Jimmy?'

'I've just been told that she's not coming in. Flu … again. We're fixing up a sub but you might as well go for coffee. It'll take a wee whilie.'
